Afternoon Tea on the Lawns of ElsamereOne very popular attraction to visit on a Kenia Safari is Elsamere. It is located on the shores of Lake Naivasha and is the former homestead of Joy Adamson. Joy is famous for her story of raising Elsa the lion cub with her husband George, immortalised in the book and movie Born Free. Every afternoon at Elsamere there is afternoon tea served on the lush green lawns overlooking the lake. Upon arrival you are shown to a small room where a short 45 minute documentary is shown. This documentary details their lives with Elsa and the other lions, cheetahs and leopards that they successfully raised and released back into the wild. It is interesting to know that the Leopard is the only one of the three cats that was never really able to be fully habituated and trusted! Also the documentary shows how Joy came to Kenya fell in and out of love, until she met George and that was it!
Joy is also world famous for her paintings and drawings of the local tribes people and the plants and trees of the region. After the documentary is finished then it is time to adjourn to the lawn and enjoy home baked quiches, cakes, biscuits and puddings accompanied with freshly brewed tea and coffee or homemade lemonade. Superb Starlings often come and remove the last remaining crumbs from your plate. When you are adequately full then you are free to browse the small museum and admire the many artefacts on display. Take a leisurely stroll around the estate and enjoy the serenity of the peaceful gardens. In the giant Yellow Barked Acacia trees, Black and White Colobus Monkeys cavort in the safety of the branches, occasionally venturing down to the ground to collect some fruit. When it is time to leave a motor boat will collect you and take you for a relaxing cruise back to your lakeshore accommodation, a perfect day on a Kenya Safari.
